'01A Tubes

I have a Freed-Eisemann NR-5 that I want to restore. It uses 5 '01A tubes. I have access to UV-201A's and UX-201A's. I believe that one is a long pin and one is a short pin. I am nor sure which is which. I think that I need the short pin version. Would someone please verify this? Thanks!

Hi Dennis

Your NR-5 should use sockets where tubes push in and rotate to lock in place.. Both UV & UX type tubes have a side bayonet pin and will work in these sockets.

UV tubes have short pins. These tubes don't work in more modern sockets where tubes plug into sockets with holes for pins.

Thanks so much for this information. I do have the twist-lock sockets. I guess the locator pin on side is positioned so that there is not too much tension on the spring contacts. I hadn't thought about that. I have one tube with the radio. Do you know the pin length difference in 'long' versus 'short'? I can measure this one. Also, does it really make any difference as to whether I use 'globe' or shoulder style profile?

Hi Dennis

There is no difference between the bayonet pin and bottom of tube pins. The ones with short pins just have the bayonet pin higher. Either type makes contact in twist lock type sockets.

You can use either globe or "ST" shaped tubes. Electrial spec is the same. Globe type are older and cost more.

Unless there is a clearance problem, such that too long a pin would contact something it's not supposed to, either should work. My Atwater-Kent model 20 uses five 01A's also.
