Hi Sean
Philco schematic and other information can be found at:
http://www.nostalgiaair.org/Riders/PHL.htm
How many pins does your light bulb tube have? If 4 it's a 280. If 6 pins and no top cap it will be a 42.

:It has 6 pins on the light bulb tube. Other tubes are an 80 and two 36's

:light bulb tube doesn't have a grid cap. The radio tube manual(from AES) says a 42 looks like an st tube according to their max view size. My tube gets continually wider at the top of the bakelite base until it curves over just like a light bulb

Hi Sean
Believe Philco was the only manufacturer to use globe shaped 42's. AES will sell them used but have "call" for a price. This usually means they don't have any. You may want to use another, more modern, 42 tube while testing your Philco 80.
The were listed for $45, used a few years ago.

Yes, it is a 42, just older style and more valuable. Don't throw it out even if it's weak.

As long as your 42 has some emission it wouldn't prevent you from hearing sound. You could try another 41 or 42 tube.
Measure B+ voltage. Pin #2 & #3 on your 42 should both be positive. Pin #4 about 15 volts negative when measured from pin #5.

:The radio lives!.....wiggled tubes...gave it a good length of wire, BLEW OUT THE TUNER,(50 YEARS OF CRUD), BENT BACK TUNER FINS. CLEANED out pot, screwed in loose dial lamp, glued torn speaker, soldered on new grid wire on 1st 3 tube..and listin to it now,,..very good sound...I probably should order another 42 tube and save the 42 light bulb tube
