Hi Sean

Does your radio have its antenna coil? A tuned antenna coil helps prevent this. Due to the way a superhet radio operates it will pick up images unless the front section tunes them out.

If you live close to a strong station you may still have signals a couple places on the dial. If this is the case shielding the radio may prevent the problem. This wouldn't be practical with your radio but is done with communication receivers. These receivers are usually in metal enclosures.

Hi,
Yes, that loop is the coil if there is a trimmer type cap adjustment.

If that adjustment does not remedy the issue, you can try adding an item called a "wave trap", essentially it is an antenna oscillator coil with a tuning condensor parallel, one end is grounded, the other end attaches to the outer coil, it is adjusted by putting the radio on a station near the interfering station, and then adjusting the cap to the point where the interference is reduced, or eliminated.

If it is only one station that you are hearing, proximity to the transmitter is likely the issue, otherwise if several stations do it: Many Philco's use an IF of 262 Khz, and they were prone to image issues. The airline may have the same IF frequency, in which case, to some extent you have to live with it if everything else has been tuned to primary peak, and not a secondary harmonic peak- You would notice this if at the time of adjusting trimmers you had two locations of a strong signal on one adjustment screw. Which is something that does not occur on every reciever.
