There were wet & dry electrolytic caps. When you shake a wet electrolytic you can hear liquid inside. Don't leave these connected in a radio. I've seen them spray liquid throughout a radio.
Modern types are called dry electrolytics. They are still moist inside.
Electrolytics do more than just filter hum. They isolate circuits, help hold voltage constant and improve low frequency response.

:O.k. I'm learning here, but what is the difference between wet and dry electrolytics. My rogers majestic has one in it(schematic says). Why would you need a 16uf cap in a battery operated set? Are we supossed to water them like we water our plants?!
I would use 22 mf @ 450 volts for 16 mfd cap. Don't know how it's use but probably a filter cap with high voltage?

::so you have to shake the radio to see if the cap "sloshes" around
:...My rogers majestic has a 16 uf cap in it....no voltage rating
