Hi John,
Thanks for the reply.Actually the values on the cap are as foll. red/50mfd/150vwdc,yell/100mfd/25vwdc. Does this addt'l info help in answering my orig. ques. if so pls. respond.

Thanks Again,
Sam

Hi,
If there is a resistor between the unknown lead and the green lead (Usually about 750 to 1K Ohm and 1 watt), it is a filter cap, and the unknown wire would therefore be the red wire, and that clipped wire the yellow. A way to verify that the yellow is excess is to look for a tubular cap in the cathode circuit of the audio output tube. Or there was actually a discrete tubular with a 25 volt to 35 volt working voltage range on the plate circuit, sometimes across the audio transformer, that perhaps was fine when the filter caps were replaced originally. If the latter is the case (plate circuit), that tubular is very likely dried out and should be replaced too. If the former (cathode circuit), which would be anywhere from .01 to .25 microfarad with a 200 to 600 working voltage range, the cap "may" still be acceptable, but it would not hurt to replace it too.
