Magnavox Astro-Sonic Series 30 Stereo Console

I have a 1967 Magnavox Astro-Sonic Series 30 (The Hancock). I am attempting to troubleshoot this beast myself - maybe someone can help. The right side has been weak to silent. Now, the left side is gone. I turn it on. I hear sound for 30 seconds, then a "pop" and complete silence. That powerful, rich Maggie sound I remember from thge 1960s is gone. What do I need to do? And where do I get parts? I am also looking for the correct, original turn table.

Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Hi,
I do not have the circuit for this, but from the description, it sounds like one cap is probably dead shorted on the one channel, and the other channel has a cap that shorts as it warms up.

Assuming the output transistors are okay, and that other transistors do no exhibit excessive leakage, replace every electrolytic capacitor, as those that may be okay, may not be in the enar future.

If you have a capacitor tester, this will help, but in the long run, you are just better of recapping all electrolytics completely.

The caps are inexpensive in modest quantities through Digikey www.digikey.com.

You can also compare resistor values between sides to see if you may need to replace a resistor that has shifted value, but most of those are new enough that they should be no problem.

Replacement of the caps should all that is required.

Jim and Pat,
I have a friend who is a former Magnavox employee and has almost all the original Magnavox service literature from the 50's through the 70's, which he is willing to share. He has helped me on a Magnavox stereo of my own, and perhaps can help you. I do not want to post his name and address publicly without his permission, but email me and I will help you get in touch with him.
