Cleaning Grille Cloth
7/15/2002 10:53:16 PMMark Kurtz
I have a radio that has very nice grille cloth, not ripped or stretched and it is still attached to the cardboard. The only problem is that it is stained. Anyone have any tips on cleaning the cloth (it appears to be rayon) without damaging it?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
You may not have luck with cleaning it- getting it wet with watewr to a point of saturation will shrink it to about half it's original size.

You could try a spray on product like K2r, where you spray it on, and let it dry, then gently brush it off. Otherwise, most water type stains are the result of minerals, dirt, and dyes that were left behind when the water evaporated. If it is tobbacco smoke stanis, the K2r is about it, but you could try a chlorinated solvent such as brake cleaner, or contact cleaner.

The other problem is evening out the appearance.

Mark - on cloths that are intact (no rips/tears) that
are dirty and stained, I vacuum first and then using
regular clothing dye, I'll go ahead and dye it at least
one shade darker than what is on the radio - doesnt
work with very light grill clothes, but does cover
up any stains! - esp good for faded grill cloths -
I use a small sponge and dab the dye on the exposed
areas (usually the grill cloth is mounted and can be
removed from the radio)
Works good for me

Joe
