Where to buy replacement speaker
7/26/1999 11:17:42 AMMichael Johnson
I need a good 10" full range speaker for my Airline Radio. I have found several musical instrument speakers, but I don't think they would have a good enough range of frequency response. I would like one that especially covers the lower frequncies well.
Thanks.

mike,
you didnt say if that airline has fm or not, but if it's am only, your response will be well within just about any full range speaker..A.M broadcast has a very limited musical frequency span..
not only that, your output transformer setup will limit that even more...
it's difficult for a single speaker to cover widely, thus the use of 2 way or 3 way crossover networks in modern equipment..
what will make somewhat of listening difference is the SPL rating over 90..since the output of your radio is limited to a few watts..
Parts express has an overwhelming selection, but youre not going to hear a huge difference for twice the money..

Hello Michael, The bass response of a speaker system relies on the baffling or enclosure used. The sound from the rear of the cone is opposite phase to the front ( it pushes when the front pulls, etc) and the two cancel out at low frequencies. An enclosure to controll the rear radiation can alleviate this effect and is the purpose of a speacer box. many radios relied on the baffling effect of the cabinet to provide a long path length for the rear sound waves. The lowest frequencies reproduced depend on the size of the baffle and this limits the bass. The bass resonant frequency of the speaker is used to augment the bass and a really low frequency speaker is probably wasted. The limited high frequencies from AM also make the bass seem stronger. Daves answer is spot on the money, also with regard speaker efficiency. Often this is sacrificed to allow high power handling. This may be a backward step with the few watts most radios could provide, sensitivity rather than power handling is more useful. Of course some of the REALLY expensive high powered speakers are both sensitive and can handle very high power. This is necessary for the extreme sound pressure levels demanded at music venues now. A reasonable quality general speaker should suit fine. You might also pick up a suitable replacement at a vintage swap meet. this is one of the advantages of belonging to a club. Good Luck, Don.
