If you are sure the knobs are bakelite paint remover will not damage them. Try a small spot first to be sure.
Bakelite can be tested by heating with a soldering iron or hot pin. Plastic will melt, bakelite will not.
If plastic, painted with latex paint, try soaking overnight in soapy water.

:Hi All,
: Does anyone know how to remove paint from bakelite? Somebody painted the knobs on one of my Arvin metal radios a God awful PINK. I don't want to try using paint remover because I know what it will do to the plastic.
:Take care and thanks

If the knobs are a vinyl compound, they will melt also. Vinyl knobs flex a bit, and usually do not feel as dense.
:Hi Norm,
: Well, now that you mention it, no I am not sure whether they are Bakelite or not but I will sure give them a shot with the iron to test. They were the original knobs on this model 444 Arvin so I don't know if they are plastic or Bakelite. Let ya know later.
:Thanks

:Hi,
:If the knobs are plastic or bakelite, often the paint will come off by letting them soak for a few days in DOT3 (polyethylene glycol). If it was a spray paint, or brush pant not from factory production, the old paint will usually come off over night. I have not tried it on factory production paint, butit should- it will take a few days though.
