capacitors!! whats the rule on replacement

hello
im repairing some old vintage 50,s televisions! my question is about capacitors!! whats the rule on replacements! i was told mfd must be the same but voltage can be the same or higher! say i need a cap at 60mfd x 450 but cant find one! and the only close one would be 80mfd x 450 would this still be ok to use. im just wondering because i was told to keep mfd the same and voltage can be higher or the same!! any one a pro at this e-mail me rick thomas graveyard49@attbi.com

Rick - general rule of thumb is pretty much what you have stated - mfd have to be the same or slightly higher. voltage rating can not be any lower than the original component. voltage rating can be higher as long as the physical size of the replacement component fits in the space of the original.

Hi, Did you ever consider linking two 30mf caps together? cf

Connecting two 30 mfd./450V caps in parallel should be OK if you have the space. Also, an 80 mfd. should be just fine. Don't go too far overboard on capacitance, as you will increase the surge current when the TV first turns on. Could blow a fuse, or damage a rectifier.
