Philco Model 16
7/14/1999 6:01:34 PMSteve Plaskon
Hi,
I have a Philco Model 16 radio. I have a few questions
to ask about the Radio.
How do I find a troubleshooting manual for the Radio?
The rubber parts in the tuner section are needing
to be replaced, is there a good source to find these parts?
I have never worked on a tube type radio before
are there areas of high
voltage that I need to watch out for?
Is this radio worth fixing?
I powered the radio up using a variable
transformer over a long period of time.
The radio is just giving me a hum is this good or bad?
Thanks for all replies Steve

Hi Steve

Information about the Philco 16 is in Rider Vol #4. To get this information go to nostalgiaair home page and click on Rider Vol #4. Then under Philco click on 4-3 and 4-4. This is information for your radio.

Certain rubber mounts and other parts for old radios are sold by Antique Electronic Supply, tubesandmore.com . For others you will need to locate similar parts in hardware stores.

There will be voltages in your radio to the 300 volt range. Hum is actually a good sign. The electrolytic filter capacitors need to be changed but the speaker should be ok. You can use 10 mfd @ 450 volt capacitors to replace the 8's in your radio. Watch the polarity when installing replacements.

Good luck..
Norm

Hi Steve,
I have a 16 also that needs restoration, it hums loudly
too-it is completely original so will need all new
capacitors. This radio has killer performance when
working right and aligned. As for the rubber parts in
the tuning dial, I understand they can be replaced with
o-rings and rubber grommets from the hardware store.
I have not opened mine up yet to check it out. Mine is
bad enough that the rubber drive wheel no longer meshes.

This is DEFINITELY worth restoring.
