i just started working on this. someone has replaced the "preselector coil" with an adjutable coil of some type. it too is open. what can i replace this with?. it is rider-crosley 4-15.

Hi Eddie

Too many windings to find an exact replacement coil. I would first see if the coil in the radio could be repaired. Which of the 4 windings are open? If you don't need shortwave the universal antenna coil from AES, tubesandmore.com will work.

norm,

i checked the coil that had been cut and it checks ok. about 15 ohms. i hooked it back up with jumper leads. i hooked the signal generator to the antenna screw and got a tone on the correct frequency. but, i get no stations. i would assume this means everything is working, just not well enough to pick up a station. why would someone have cut this good coil out and replaced it with an adjustable one and mounted it outside of the set. do you peak the if with the adjustable caps?there are about 6 of them on one end of the chassis. i also get some squealing and occilation at high volume

Eddie

Have no idea why someone would cut the original coil lose and add another one unless the radio has a problem and they thought that might fix it.. Yes there will be adjustment screws to peak the IF Transformers. The IF Frequency of this radio is 181.5Kc.

Does the oscillator operate? It's the 56 tube on the left of the schematic. If so, the grid should show a slight negative voltage and vary while tuning.

Squealing is often caused by open caps. Have the filter caps been changed?

This should be a good radio. It has 2 IF stages and push-pull audio output.

norm,
it tweaked the trimmer caps and got the radio to play. i was doing the tweaking by ear. this is with the original coil hooked back up. the audio still has a lot of noise and low volume. when i try to adjust the trimmers to get more volume, i get more noise. can you tell me the correct procedure for aligning this with my signal generator? it is difficult to adjust the trimmers because they are brass 1/4 nuts. i am having to use an uninsulated nut driver to adjust them. thanks for the help.

Great Eddie

The noise may be from the IF stages going into oscillation as they are getting near peak. It's very important for the #58 tubes to have shields when you peak the IF's.

Other than the 181.5Kc frequency, I did not find a write up for adjusting your Crosley. Feed in your signal and adjust to max. Your radio does have an AVC line. You can measure the AVC voltage and adjust until it is the most negative on a meter. The AVC line can be found at the junction of #16, 59, 10 and 13. (It's hard to see the numbers on the schematic.)
