Grundig-Majestic 3262 schematic and tweeter repair?
6/24/1999 9:11:43 PMPaul Thompson
I have a nice grundig-majestic 3262 that for the most
part works very good.
I need a schematic diagram and any special alignment
instructions to optimize the unit.
2 things that do not work is the tweeters.
The high voltage bias is present and the high freq
audio is also present but the tweeters produce no output
Is there someting that will bring them back to life.
overhall tips?
Thank you for any helpfull information,

Hi Paul, It sounds like you're describing an electrostatic tweeter. I don't know your particular set but if it is an ES tweeter it's probably fed from an output tube plate via a small coupling capacitor with DC bias voltage supplied from B+ via a high value resistor. If you're getting the audio fed through and high voltage it seems to only leave the speaker at fault. They consist of a backing plate and a thin diaphram stretched in front. The signal is fed to them and the electrostatic force attracts the diaphram which vibrates with the varying voltage. High quality ES speakers, particularly full range units are push pull operation, a signal plate on each side of the diaphram but the cheaper units operating only at high frequencies are usually single ended, they're OK for this use. I would think the usual problem would be a short across it but if that was the case you shouldn't be able to measure voltage across it. Since both units are faulty it must be a common cause. It's possible that one of the connections is poor, perhaps corrosion at the diaphram. The German sets often had the speakers switched in and out of operation for tone control and I don't think there would be a lot of obvious sound from the tweeters, just the very high notes. On AM the high frequencies would be fairly weak, you may only notice them on FM or phono. I don't know how you would go about repairing them they're probably sealed at manufacture and not easily opened. You will just have to examine them carefully and see what you can do. Just be certain they really are faulty before attacking them. Put yourear right up to them to try and hear any sound from them. Perhaps someone else has experience with the particular units and can offer extra advice. Good Luck, Don.
