If your Peerless has the original speaker if will be high impedance. They were made to be driven by 01A or 71A tubes. The best way to couple this speaker would be through a 1 mf @ 400 volt cap directly to the plate of an output tube in an old radio.

: just found a neat looking peerless speaker(1929) at a garage sale.case needs tlc. I have knowledge on electro magnetic and pm speakers but I haven't the slightest idea how this thing works. Everything seems stiff. Does it have any impedance and how doesit couple to the receiver? Ant help ?? Thanks

Don Thanks for the info. I have taken the armature? apart and cleaned a lot of rust off. Still doesn't work will keep tinkering. John
The speaker will have a coil with resistance around 1000-2000 ohms. Sometimes they are open but many have two windings in series. It's best to rewind an open coil but if you can get to the wires one good winding will allow the speaker to operate.

: : Hi John, Your Peerless speaker will be a Magnetic speaker. The desighn is different from the modern moving coil speaker, it will use a set of coils with a permanent bias magnet to operate on a moving iron armature that's coupled to the cone by a rod. They have very limited movement as you noticed, perhaps made worse with time due to the rubber suspension hardening. The quality of sound is "peaky" compared to the moving coil type that superceded it within a few years but it's quite collectible and would suit a radio of the late twenties. Don Black.

Norm Thanks for the help on the peerless speaker. I have taken the magnets apart and cleaned a lot of rust off the pole pieces? The linkage seems to be tight still. Is there an air gap between the pole pieces
Thanks again John
Yes, you need an air gap but the smaller the better. Also the center piece should be spaced equally between the pole pieces. If it touches your speaker will distort. If the gap is large the volume from the speaker will be low.
