Those eye tubes lose some of their green after a few hundred hours of operation. The tube may be good on a tester meter and still not have much green. Check your tube type, replacements are available from Antique Electronic Supply, tubesandmore.com and others.
If your radio has a power transformer you will have some improvement lighting the dial using #44 lamps. The #47 has a 6.3 volt @ .15 amp filament while the #44 has a .25 amp filament and will be brighter.
