I have a RCA short wave portable radio that needs a 1l6 type tube. This is a hard tube to find. are their any substitues that would work?

Hi Ralph

1L6 tubes are for sale but they usually go for $30.00. The 1R5 will replace a 1L6 but it may not oscillate on the highest frequency short wave bands. Some suggest using a 1U6 but that is even harder to find and has less fil. current. You can use the 1LA6 but it needs an adaptor.

Hi Ralph, Go to the links site here on Nostalgia Air and look at Padgett Peterson's Zenith Trans-Oceanic and Hickok Pages. He has looked at the problem of replacing the 1L6 converter tube in the Zenith in great detail with a number of options. It's well worth reading if you've got this problem. Good luck, Don.
