You can use the 99 tubes in circuits that called out the 01A. The filament of the 99 is only 3 volts at .06 amps while the 01A is 5 volts at .25 amps.
The UV99 does not have the same base wiring as the X. Besides the short pins the "V" tube has the filament contacts diagonal, not side by side.
What type of circuits are you looking for? The commercial radios of the time usually had 5 tubes. Examples of these circuits can be found in Rider Vol #1. This book may be available from your local library. You could also build 1 or 2 tube radios.

Thanks for the response Norm. I have lots of info on
commercially built radios in this era. What I'm looking
for is articles/copies/schematics/Pictorial layouts
of radio's that were
built on breadboards at home using these tubes. Info
from books or mags like 'The Boy Mechanic', 'Radio News'
'QST' etc.

Hi Robert
I have a lot of information on such projects. Some of the most interesting may be in a book I recently purchased over the internet from 1924, Reflex Radio Receivers. In the early days of radio, many people were interested in building radios. Articles, with schematics, were even printed in newspapers. Are there specific circuits that you are looking for?

To Mr R E Carpenter, Yes many ideas. I have seen lots
of home made early recievers. They vary widely in many
respects. Some run off batteries. Some run off the
mains. Some have a loudspeaker. Some only work
headphones. I take it that you want to make one of
these work. I don't know how often you check to see
if you have a reply for this query. I couldn't find
your e mail address, I would have e mailed you.
My e mail address is johnnew@dialstart.net
If I can be of any help drop me a line. John Newman.
