Removing a broken knob spring... help! ; )
4/17/2002 10:00:12 PMMiles Flynn
Alright, so I found a place that sells knob springs to fit on half-moon shafts. The only problem is I cannot get the old broken spring out of the knob. Is there something I'm missing here? I tried prying it out with a very high-tech fingernail cleaner... but it's not working. Here's a brief description of the spring itself, in case the helps...

It's a small metal band inside the knob (bakelite knob, by the way) with a little turn on one end so that it runs into a slot in the knob.

Any ideas?

Miles,
I have never had one stuck like yours. In older wooden knobs they are simply pushed into a groove with the bent ends facing the outside of the knob. Perhaps if you carefully/gently warm the knob a little it will expand and release? I am guessing that the knob is grabbing the sides of the bent spring and was originally installed with a small arbor press or when the part was warm. Press/shrink fit. Alternately someone could have used superglue to hold it together?
Good luck!
Jeff
