Silvertone Victrola

Had a person contact me with the following question.

He has been looking around for a windup Victrola. He contacted a local SwapShop Radio program. He received a call from a Lady that said she had one that had Silvertone on it. I surmized that since Sears & Roebuck have been in business since the 1800's it possible They had some built from Victor Company and had SilverTone put on it. Silvertone up until a few years ago was the store Brand name for Sears for all Radio/Stereo/ and TV until they abandoned it for selling name brands.

The lady swore the unit actually had a handle and wound up.

Is there such a thing as a SilverTone Victrola??

About 25 years ago we bought a victrola from an estate sale in country Virginia. Have just recently tried to find out what kind, value, etc. Indeed, it is a silvertone and yes it has a handle and winds up. Have discovered that Crescent Talking Machine Company was one of a few that produced machines around 1912-1916. This company had nothing to do with Sears. They were not in business very long. I am still trying to find more information. My unit is not an upright. It is a console model.

I have a upright Silvertone victrola in excellent working condition. Its a wind up, with a needle point head and a diamond head. Excellent felt, original tiny plastic instruction record. early 1900's? Great cabinet as well.

Hi,
Actually- No.

Many people get confused by the term "Victrola"- Which was actually correctly applied to Victor portables.

"Silvertone" WAS a name Sears used ont heir wind-up and later electric motorized acoustic phonographs.

Think of it akin to how people mis-use "Linoleum"- Most people use it to describe Vinyl flooring (both those who sell, and those who buy), and no one I have ever encountered in flooring sales ever asked, or asks if I mean vinyl, or actual linoleum- A critical distinction for those who ever have had true linoleum flooring.

I've had a few RCA Victrola's and never heard of Silvertone(Sears) making a wind-up player until I just found one at a yard sale. Its a low boy style console
from the 1920's with (4)Queen Ann legs,2 doors...one for 78 records and the other that contains the horn inside with a very ornated wood cutout design in front
with nice grill cloth. The top opens up(left & right) to reveal the turntable with the same style Victrola
chrome plated arm, speed lever, and about 3 chrome needle containers for the old style Victrola pin needles, also has the old brake lever. A rare & unique find for only $20.00. This is the first side crank (Victrola) by Silvertone I've ever seen. Lokking forward to refinishing it and finding more info on it.

As John said, NOONE MAKES THE VICTROLA OTHER THAN VICTOR. No other phonograph made by or for any other company can be called a Victrola. This is a trademark name held by the Victor Talking Machine Company. Any other wind-up phonograph is simply a wind-up phonograph that may or may not have some other trademark name held by its manufacturer. Also, do not confuse Victor with RCA Victor. Though RCA bought out Victor in either the late 1920s or early 1930s (I forgot...think it was the late 1920s), all phonographs and records made prior to this point have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH RCA, and should never be associated with the RCA name. They are simply Victor Talking Machine products.

To clarify things further, if anyone out there happens to be lucky enough to own anything manufactured by the Victor Animatograph Corporation, "Makers of The World's Finest 16mm Movie Equipment," this company has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH the Victor Talking Machine Company, or the later RCA Victor. Anyone who happens to come across a large speaker in a wooden box (later ones were metal) covered with tweed or black artificial leather covering, with a 10 inch circular opening for the speaker that says Victor across it as the grill, this is a Victor Animatograph Speaker, which is used with the Victor ANIMATOPHONE model 40 sound projector. The speaker may or may not have its stamped brass escutcheoun on top, which says "Victor Animatgraph Corporation." This speaker is NOT made by RCA.

: I believe your question should have bee, "Is there a such thing as a Silvertone Phonograph?" The answer would be yes.
I at this very moment am researching one myself. I have found that this model may have been made by Sears, or it is more likely made by Crescent Tlking Machine Company, out of new York, from 1912-1917. But as far as I know yet, there is no way of knowing. I am still amidst my research. The model I have is a tall uprite model with double doors and a top very much like a Victor machine. It is made of very beautiful dark wood, and works great. I just have not been able to find much more on this. I hope that answers some of your questions.

Sears usually did not make things, but instead contracted with other companies kind of like Montgomery Ward's. For instance, my dad's late 1940s Craftsman saw has the motor made by Emerson Electric, and the rest of the saw is made perhaps by someone else. I forgot. I think that some of his Craftsman items were made by Delta.
