Hi there,

I would really appreciate any information regarding the Hallicrafter sx42's bandswitch and wafers, in particualr the wiring diagram/schematic. Is there possibly a web site currently hosting such information?

Many thanks

Hi Vincent

I'll send you the schematic. Even though it's on two pages it's still not easy to read. This a very complicated radio. Rider Vol #17 has additional information. If you can locate a copy it may help.

I have just aquired an sx42 and looking for info when I saw your emails. Is there a chance that I could get a copy of the front end jpged to me? The receiver is working, but requires an extreme antenna. The front end tubes look like 6AG5 6SG7 and the octotube looks like a 7h7, can you confirm.

Hi,
You can download a copy of the owner's manual with all of the pertinent info here:
http://bama.sbc.edu/hallicra.htm

Two things plague these radios consistently, and they are the filter caps, and the paper caps. I went through mine completely, and even though there was evidence it had been partly under water at some point in it's existence, the water had zero net effect, it was the paper caps that had dried out or shorted out that were more of a problem.

Also, be aware that SX42's have a design flaw that can ruin the selecter switch- for which there is no replacement except for a procedure that Phil used for his. He also profiles how the defect can be averted:
