Grundig Model 102U

I recently purchased a Grundig 102U radio. It has a tube lineup of ECC86, EAF801, ECL86. and shows B250 c100id. The Grundig homepage nor Rider Manuals online provide any reference to Grundig. Any suggestions as to a site where I can get a schematic and more information on this radio?

Hi Jerry, Your Grundig is a German radio. Those tubes are the European numbering sustem and there are equivalent American numbers. I think the ECC86 is wrong. The ECL86 is a 6GW8 triode / power pentode and is used for the audio amplifier (triode) and output tube (pentode). The EAF801 should be a diode / RF pentode by the European number system and would be used for the IF amplifier and detector. I can't find any listing for this tube. An EAF81 exists and is a posibility. The EAF801 could be a later version of this tube. The ECC68 is equivalent to an American 6GM8 and is a twin RF triode for use off a car battery with 12 vol B+. This would seem right out of place here and as the other tubes indicate an AM only set this tube should be a frequency converter such as an ECH81/6AJ8 triode-heptode. I think the B250 c100id will be a selenium bridge rectifier. I don't have a schematic for this set but I'll email another Grundig that might be of some help. I'll also scan the tube data for you. Can you please check the type numbers. There might be a label listing them if so compare them with the tubes in the set. I would have expected an IF/detector tube with double diodes such as an EBF80 or EBF89. The selenium bridges sometimes short or become inefficient, check for shorts before applying power. They can be replaced with a silicon bridge but will need some added resistance in series to keep the B+ down to the correct value as the silicon is more efficient. Otherwise the faults are similar to American sets, electrolytic and paper capacitors are suspect. It could be a late enough model to have plastic capacitors instead of paper and these are usually reliable. Don Black.
