Re: ON/OFF Volume Control for '36 Philco Model 45

The ON/OFF and Volume Control Pot for this Philco model 45 has me stumped. The pot reads 12m ohm
across the outside contacts that are the carbon band. The part that bothers me is that bothers me is that there is another contact connected to the carbon band. The reading between the one outside contact and
this 4th contact is 12m ohm and to the other ends of the band .8m ohm. This 4th contact runs through a
10k resistor and then a .9uf cap to ground. What can I replace it with. I am sure its bad because the
wiper has a very intermittent continuity, and the ON/OFF is open.

Hi Kevin

You may be able to clean the carbon element but if the on/off switch doesn't work the unit will need to be replaced. The 4th contact on the control is tone compensation. If you can't find a control with this terminal just leave the two components off.

You can buy new controls from AES, tubesandmore.com, and from other sources. The volume control value will usually be .5-2meg (exact value not critical). When buying a control be sure to ask for, "Audio Taper".
