Blocking powerful local AM station
8/23/2014 12:14:05 PMJack
Have an old early radio that I have mentioned before. It has 5 taps. 1520 is taps 2-5 and 1140 is tap 5. Those are the only 2 stations that it will pick up and only 1520 at night. At night, it picks up 1520 on tap 5 since 1140 is only daytime. 1520 is a 50,000 watt. Is there a way, without changing the radio, to filter out 1520?
I know it is doubtful to extend the range, without changing the radio itself. Which I don't want to do.
feel this might be helpful to others as well. who want to block out a very powerful station.

You can install a notch filter between the antenna and the set's antenna input. These can be passive or active, with the passive ones being simple to make but the active ones being more sharper/more effective (and more expensive). You might be able to buy a commercial AM band notch filter specifically for this purpose.

Google "AM notch filter" for in-depth discussions of their theory and practice.

You might get more info by searching for "wave trap."

"Notch filter" is the precise technical term, but wavetrap describes its use for exactly the purpose you desire... blocking a strong local radio station.
