"Zoomer-Radio" on my 1940 Emerson DQ334

I was just sort-of trying to re-organize this stack of 1/2-finished radios I've got laying around here for years.

In the pile I uncovered an Emerson DQ-334 that I recapped and cleaned up a few years ago... but seems I forgot about it.
This is it:

I posted it at www.RadioAtticArchives.com several years ago ... but I still haven't re-finished that nice-styled but cruddy, beat-up and dirty old Ingraham cabinet.

I did have to re-cone it myself because that nice-looking 6" cone in those photos got ripped just from kicking around here.

So, anyway I turned it on tonight, and I was VERY pleasantly reminded of just how great this 'ole Emerson radio sounds!

It may have something to do with this nice large 6" cone, I'm not sure, but I have to say that for a regular-old standard AA5 design...I just can't believe the great deep rich-sounding bass response it has.

I also just happen to be listening to some great 1930's jazzy-blues songs right now (12:30am EDST)

The broadcast is 740 AM "Zoomer Radio" out of Toronto.

It rarely ever comes in very well here in north Jersey, but with a bit of an antenna extension to the regular built-in... I'm enjoying a rare treat tonight!

This station is really unusual with great programming ideas:

Tonight's program is Blues Radio .. and very "adult" oriented.

As far as the wooden cabinet goes, I may now just decide to refinish this thing very soon.

So if I do that ... I'll post the complete "before & after" photo set.

I recommend finding one of these to rebuild on Ebay or wherever you can get it... especially the model with a 6" speaker! I believe there is one or two out there now.

I also heartily recommend that 740 AM Zoomer-Radio station out of Toronto.

I am lucky to have two Oldies AM stations here, AM 650 from Vancouver, BC, and AM 880 KIXI out of Seattle. They have a hard time keeping sponsors nowadays with so many digital music sources out there, And FM of course..

Did y'all know that 40,000 radio stations are availble to anyone with a cellphone?
My son gets no AM where he is so he tunes in radio on his iPhone with an app called iTunes. That he plugs his phone into an earphone adaptor on the radio I gave them for last year, the 1933 Airline lowboy. Two 8" speakers and they don't even notice it's only mono.

Thanks,
I didn't know about 40k stations... no.

But what I've done for my PERSONAL general hi-fi music pleasure is:

I built an MP-3 input stereo, Push-Pull (3-4 watt) tube-amp using tiny pencil-sized 5902 sub-miniature tubes driven with dual OP-275 j-fet op-amps.

(I'll provide the schematic for anyone interested. It was posted here a while ago too.)

This tiny but powerful amp is so fantastic, it fills my living room and more with the most beautiful rich sounds.

I never expected it to be such high fidelity or have such power!

Using an online utility program called "youtube2mp3" ...I download to my MP-3 player, all of my favorite 30s-40s music from You-tube.
The utility strips off the video.

Then I make sure all the audio levels are the same using another program called "mp3gain" (a free download).

I have hundreds of the worlds best songs now, and so I just plug my MP-3 player into my little 5902 P-P tube-amp and set the MP3 player for shuffle.
.... A perfect listening evening follows.

Of course my MP-3 player is also an FM radio.... so to that extent I have most of my quality music bases covered.
