high voltage capacitor

ok why a 1000 volt 1000 mmf capacitor across this amplifier ac plug.? now I know that would be pf now. also they have the same type and size going to ground from one side of ac plug?? make sense to any body. amp Magnavox 142AB thank you

thank you. ive seen this article before. new problem. left radio unattended, power transformer went up in smoke on amp. need ideas on a replacement for the amp 142A. its 574 volts sec. 195ma 5v 3a 6-3v 4a ? yes one of the 5Y3 tubes shorted causing the transformer to smoke. now I know the smoke alarms work great. thank you any help is welcome.

Were the capacitors replaced in this unit? Bad caps is usually the cause of the failure you describe.

It takes a little while studying his list.
But you can usually find one there.
He has a $20 min order.

:to answer first question. yes all capacitors where replaced. yes they are installed properly. next playthings of the past is a no go for me. made him mad once now im on his bad list. question I have is what would be a good sub. one with 285-0-275 200ma or 300-0-300 200ma old transformer is 574 volt center tapped at 195ma. thank you.

Either one of those seem ok, as long as you've got sufficient current on the low voltage windings as well.

Before installing it just try to temporarily jumper it in place and take some measurements to be sure.

thank you for the reply. im going with the 300-0-300 ct. transformer. the 5 volt and 6.3 volt filaments side have 3 amps and 4 amps on 6.3. will use a dropping resistor if needed. thank you

hi. have the amp up and running now. tube tuner is dead now. hash noise at full volume. no stations.
