FM Converter?/Philco 42-1015

On the 42-1015, which has the old FM bank on it, the previous owner has a small metal box that is attached to the antenna leads on the chassis. At first I thought it was one of those antenna boosters, but it has a decal on it (partial), and states "FM convertor, 88.5- then it is missing". Is it possible there was a convertor from the old to new FM out there in the early 50's? I have not restored the chassis yet, so I cannot test the band to see whats up with it.

Thank you. It is a 5 inch small box, maybe 1.5 inches high that dangles from the two pronged aux. antenna input. I will open it up and have a look inside. I think it must be some aftermarket converter to receive at least a few stations on the high or low end of the old FM band.
