Lafayette Model B-21
7/21/2014 6:26:06 PMDave Froehlich
Hello All,
Is it true that this model is exactly the same as a Montgomery Ward Airline model 62-185, but actually made by Wells Gardner? I read this online but I'm double checking. The radio I'm working on says "Lafayette" on it. But there's no model number anywhere on it. But it does match a picture of the one online, that is identified as a Model B-21.

Thanks,

Dave

Hello Again,
Yes, it's exactly the same. I just replaced all the paper and electrolytic capacitors. It has a problem that seems to be in the RF stage. If I connect the antenna to the antenna lead, the signal is weak. But if I connect the antenna to the next stage, the signal is quite strong. I'll find the problem.

Hello All,
R6 was the problem. I noticed it was wrong while replacing the capacitors. So I took it out. It's supposed to be 16K ohms 2 watts. Some previous "servicer" put a 140 ohm 20 watt resistor in it's place. I replaced it with an 18K ohm NOS resistor that had drifted to 17K ohms and screen voltages returned. The radio is fully operational. All I have left to do is replace the dial belt and I'm done.
It's a very nice looking radio. The chassis and dial look almost brand new. It looks much newer than 1936 inside.

Is this an unusual radio to find? I'm going to move on to the next radio, since the Lafayette is all restored.

Thanks,

Dave
