Zenith 11Z20 FM stations in wrong place on dial
7/17/2014 11:31:35 AMDave Froehlich
Hello All,
I remember this problem. But I don't remember the solution (faulty mica capacitors?). For example 91.3 is at the exact opposite end of the band from where it should be. But the band is not backwards. All stations can be received, but they're in the wrong place, is the best way I can describe the problem. I can leave it how it is if I have to.

Thanks,

Dave

Did you restring the dial cord?

Johnnysan,
Yes I did and it's exactly correct, according to the official dial cord diagram. AM is perfect. Low stations are at the low end of the band and high stations are at the high end of the band. FM stations are all mixed up on the band but they sound amazing.
The problem is NOT the dial cord. There is another problem.

Thanks,

Dave

107.9 is at about 101. 93.1 is at about 106. The dial cord could not cause that problem. 102 is at about 98. The stations are all mixed up. I may just leave it how it is because it's not broken. 100.1 is at about 95.

88.1 is at about 102. I'll guess that Edd knows what's going on here. Since "it ain't broke" I'm not fixing this problem. All I need to do is find each station and write on a piece of paper where it is on this dial. That's a good workaround.

I think I understand what the oscillator is doing. 88 is around 102, 91.3 is at about 105, etc etc, then it continues from the beginning of the band and ends at 108 in the 100.5 position. The entire band is shifted back a little bit and the beginning of the band wrapped around to the end. But it's all linear. I guess it's not mixed up at all. I don't know how to shift it back. Parts are rusty.

Thomas,
I started another post where I said I solved the problem, because there wasn't any problem. I just adjusted the oscillator slug and that moves the entire band one way or the other until it was all back in the correct place. The threaded rod that the slug is attached to must have slipped. Maybe some loctite (or however it's spelled) will hold it in place. It appears that both slugs (tuning and oscillator) have to be lined up so that both are in the same position. That's all that had to be done.
It's exactly the same problem as when the highest station can't be tuned to in the AM broadcast band. The oscillator trimmer capacitor is adjusted until the highest frequency station is moved back so it's at the high end of the band.

Does this radio have a tuner module with a tube? Is it a vari-cap or tuned inductor type? Some FM tuners have a trimmer capacitor that if it's moved it can throw the band (FM) way off. Also, if the dial cord is put back on the FM tuner wheel from factory CW vs. CCW or CCW vs. CW the band will be backwards but, the AM band will be the normal way. I had an Motorola AM-FM radio that had this problem with the FM band. I had flipped the dial cords' direction.
