I recently purchased 60's/70's Phono-Sonic Radio cabinet/Fireplace/Bar/Turntable. I have been restoring a this piece. I am having issues with the knob that switches it to AM/FM/8-Track/Phono. When I turn the knob I can get sound to come out the speakers. But the knob is very touchy. Most of the time I can get normal sound out of he left speaker and faint sound of the right speaker. Sometimes it's the other way around. Once in a blue I can get normal sound out of both speakers. Any help would be fantastic.
Thank You, Matt

The switch that this mode knob operates is fairly complex- probably a multi-wafer unit- and is either dirty or worn. Most probably it is just dirty (more accurately, it has "oxidized switch contacts") and it can be helped with a couple of shots of aerosol electronic-contact cleaner. If you are very unlucky, it has worn-out contacts and will require replacing in order to be reliable. It's likely that if one control is flakey due to oxidation, they all are to some extent- so plan on cleaning all of them in the same session.

Is their a better brand to use or are they all about the same?
Also thank you for help.

I've had good luck with CAIG DeOxit. By "good luck" I just mean that the stuff seems to improve electrical contact while not dissolving plastic, stripping paint, or causing a vapor explosion. There may be better products out there but my experience is limited to the CAIG products, since that's what my local independent electronics store keeps in stock.
