Old Color TV - TraVler

Hi,
I found this old TV I have no idea what I have. I know nothing about electronics. My thought was to restore the cabinet and slide a new tv inside to make it appear like an old set. The wood wooding is my skill set. I'm also a historian of sorts, so before I started this, I wanted to gather a few opinions.

If I go ahead with the wood restoration and put a new set inside, I'll destroy the historical value, but I'll be easy for me. But I could TRY and make this set work. It would be neat to have!

Any opinions or advice are welcome.

I've posted photos at:

I would look at trying to make this one functional.

Digital is going to make all of todays TV's obsolete in no time, however, if you look at how much you have invested in tapes, not to mention video equipment, you will need something to play them on. This would be perfect.

The big issues are going to be if the flyback, yoke and picture tube are still good. If they are not, you will learn patience as you try to locate suitable replacements, or try to adapt more modern parts to the older set.

I would still give the nod to make the old set work regardless.

First recomendation is to replace the filter caps, and any selenium rectfifiers that may be present, and test all of the tubes. You may be surprised to find the set powers up after even just that slight amount of work, and you can further evaluate the condition of the other important parts. If the picture is predominantly green, the picture tube may be weak, or the red and blue drives may be weak or out of adjustment. At this point, go to www.samswebsite.com and see if they have the schematic available (it will likely be a photostat). Their site search does not always work, but give it a try first. If it fails, then send them an email with pertinant info. It will contain pertinent info for alignment, adjustment procedure, and some production updates.

I would then discharge the filter caps, and either put a capacitance tester on all of the tubulars, or if one is not available, replace all of the tubulars with "Orange drops".

If you get into a jam for ideas of what to check after a certain point, drop a note back in the forum.

Brandon:
Used to work on your particular model oldie set. Forget all the comments on the color aspect of it,because if you're lucky all you're going to get
to see is white.Seems like you set might be a 53-56 with the BIG 21 in pic tube. It's going to be a low Sams photofact #.If the back and its model/and/or chassis number(s) are still legible look it up ,I'm
sure I used it back then.I may still have it in my
archives.
