Hello all...I recently picked up a Federal radio set model E 45-60 WOW WHAT A BEAST..1927 and A.C operated ..Large power supply, horn speaker, and heavy chassis ..WELL built and in EXCELLENT condition.. I might electronically restore this beast but I am not familiar with the power tube in the power supply.. It should have a mecury vapor tube (BH style) and someone replaced it with a 83..Will this work? Also I would like your opinions as to wether I should carefully restore electronicaly or leave it all alone...I am not a novice but have any of you have this set?? What would you do? Leave as a trophy piece or restore and enjoy????

The change from a BH to a type 83 rectifier doesn't sound too bad, without researching it completely. Both are cold cathode rectifier tubes. if you wanted to change it back to be original the BH is available here and there.

There are big differences between BH and 83. Be sure the socket was rewired before turning the radio on.

BH is cold cathode but 83 has a 5 volt @ 2 amp filament. In addition plates of the BH are where filament is on the 83. If you turn the unit on the power transformer will burn out. High voltage winding will be shorted out by 83 tube filaments.
