REPLACING SPEAKER IN A PHILCO MODEL 40

I HAVE A PHILCO MODEL 40-195 I WANT TO GIVE TO MY SON, BUT THE SPEAKER IS DESTROYED. I CAN'T READ THE OHM VALUE ON THE FIELD COIL IN MY SCHEMATIC, TO REPLCAE IT WITH A RESISTOR.

I AM TRYING TO REPLACE IT WITH A 15 OHM 12" JENSEN. I HAD IT WORKING AT LOW VOLUME AT ONE TIME, BUT I MESSED WITH IT AND BLEW THE AUDIO XFORMER. I HAVE A HAMMOND 125B MA XFORMER AND A HAMMOND 125E ma XFORMER. BOTH ARE PUSH/PULL AND THE CONNECTIOS APPEAR TO BE THE SAME FOR BOTH, BUT WILL THE 125B HANDLE THE CURRENT.

ONCE I KNOW WHICH IS THE BEST TRANSFORMER, I HAVE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO CONNECT THE OUTPUT SIDE AND IT APPEARS THAT THE VOLUME IS CONTROLLED VIA A XFORMER TAP OFF THE OUTPUT SIDE. I HAVE REPLACED A FEW SPEAKERS, BUT NOT WITH THIS CONFIGURATION AND THE VOLUME CONTROL CONFIGURATION IS NEW TO ME.

Field coil resistance is 860 ohms. Many Philco consoles of this vintage used this value. The exact value is not critical if you are replacing with a resistor. A 1K ohm power resistor should be OK. It would be better (but more expensive) to replace the field coil with a filter choke, but the resistor alternative shouldn't be too bad, hum-wise. If it is, you can bump up the capacity value of the filter electrolytics by 50%.

FWIW, the 42 output tubes that your set uses are electrically the same as the 6F6, which may be easier to match, transformer-wise.
