8 Inch speaker replacement - 1949 Emerson 604
2/9/2014 7:25:10 PMIan
Hi there,

I was thinking about replacing the original speaker in my old project. It's from a 1949 Emerson model 604. The speakers manufacture # is 505-022

So the info I do have is:

Cone 8 – inch
Field Permanent Magnet Alnico V 6.8 Uz.
Voice Coil Impedance at 400 C.P.S. 3Ohms
Output Transformer Primary Impedance 2200 Ohms
Output Transformer Primary Resistance 285 Ohms

I want to get the best sound possible, and may consider adding another speaker or tweeter if it were of some sound benefit. Maybe one with a built in tweeter?
I would love to hear some suggestions for a replacement(s) and get some opinions on the best route for me to take.

Thanks!
Ian

Ian, there are several possibilities here, you don't mention what the problem if any with this speaker, can be re-coned if that is the problem, seeing its a perm mag speaker a replacement can easily be found that can match the mounting, I would transplant the output transformer providing its ok.

This isn't really a hi-fi amp so don't expect much of an improvement in sound by renewing the speaker. If the speaker you've got is damaged and/or sounds bad, replacements are easy to find- you can use any automotive-style 4 ohm. These can be found at chain auto-parts stores, Radio Shack, big box stores, and so on. Just buy a decent full-range speaker and forget about the tweeter- it's a waste of money.

Hi Dale and CV,

Thanks for your replies.

Right now as far as I can tell there is nothing wrong with the speaker. I understand this ain't going to blow my mind with sound quality. I was just curious if there was any advantage to or "better" replacement. I am in the process of getting the amp re capped, so I will know more about how it really sounds in a few weeks.

Thanks for the speaker info CV. You have been a big help with everything!

Ian
