Airline 62-197, LaFrance, WG 6F speakers

Hello all,

I have a 62-197 Airline without speakers. They appear to be Jensen A-12s but have a Rola basket. One has a part #P-12A206, the other #P-12A213.
Does anyone have these for sale or can tell how to determine an appropriate substitute for each? They are both 4500 ohm FC, 6.3 ohm VC.
I've been looking for old catalogs but have found nothing.
Thanks in advance!!!

This is quite a set. I'm not 100% sure of this, but it appears that the speaker fields are not used as chokes- they are just loads. If that's the case, you can retrofit the set with permag field speakers and not need to mod the power supply at all. Speakers with an 8 ohm voice coil should be OK, just be sure that you select ones that are capable of handling the power that this set can put out: I'd guess around 15-20 watts peak. Beyond the three parameters of basket diameter, VC impedance, and power-handling capability, there's not much more to say.

I agree, there is no filtering action by the speaker fields. Also, that thing must rattle windows all up and down the block. One thing to consider, how much will the B+ increase when the field load is removed? He might need to add a bleeder resistor in order to lower the Voltage.

Yes, amount the B+ increases will be dependent on the expected design load of the field coils. On a set as overbuilt as this one appears to be, I'll bet that it has current stomp to spare- so removing these loads may not cause the voltage to jump up that much. But, this is just speculation. The only way to tell for sure is to measure it, then knock it back down if needed to spec with a series power resistor of the proper size and power rating.
