Philco 95

The pwr xmfr in my philco 95 burned out, replaced it with another pwr xmfr but no 2 volts in that xmfr for filaments, using an "outboard" 6.3 v xmfr to power 3 27 in series. B+ ok til I turn on xmfr to power filaments. THEN b+ drops to half. If anyone can stop laughing, will this 'odd' hook up work?

How do you supply filament power to the other tubes in the set? They are 2 V as well, and pretty current-hungry, especially the 45s. BTW, the 45 tubes are direct-heated (no cathode sleeve) so plate current has to flow through the filament to signal ground- i.e. the filaments have to be referenced to ground somehow. In the intact set this is accomplished with an 800 ohm resistor. Not sure how this could be done otherwise.

Interesting idea, three 27's in series off of 6.3 volts. It will work but still leaves 45's. If 45's are in series there will be unequal biasing.

There are other options. Replace 2.5 volt tubes with 6.3 volt type. A 27 can be replaced by 37 or 76. 24 can be replaced by 36. 71A will work in place of 45 but filament voltage should be reduced a little.

PTOP has some transformers with 2.5 volt filaments.

Could remove 6.3 volt winding on a transformer and add 2.5? The 6.3 volt winding is usually outside layers on a transformer. Many transformers are wound 4 turns per volt. These only require 10 turns of wire for 2.5 volts.

Many thanks fellows for comments. I use a 6.3 v xmfr for 3 of the 24 tubes rewired in series, another 6.3 v. xmfr for the 3 27 tubes also rewired in series, changed out the 80 to a 6.3 v. 6X5 ? rectifier. used 5 v. of that xmfr for filaments of 45 rewired in series. I think I need to connected the c. t. of those "outboard" xmfr to chassis. May have more info later
