NOS Capacitors ~To use or not to use?
1/14/2014 5:26:14 PMGeorge T
Hi All, Just recieved a box of 50 different value capacitors. These are white porcelain cased caps and are 600 volts. They were made in Japan probably around late 50's early 60's. They are made by Argoume and are .001 thru .1 and the most used values in between. They are all in their original sealed packages in the original red box. Would you guys use these on a project or just stick with new caps. At the moment I'm thinking stick with new caps they aren't that expensive. Just thought I would float this by you all and see what you think. Thank You, George T

They are probably OK. Assuming that they weren't made with acid paper, there's nothing inside them that would deteriorate in storage.

I wouldn't use NOS electrolytics, however.

If you don't already own one, this would be a good excuse to acquire a cap checker so that you can perform "incoming inspection" screening on the entire batch. That way you will know that there are no "clunkers" lurking in the pile.

Yep that is what I was thinking I guess use them if in a bind and check them before use. I have a few cap checkers and can hit it with high volts if needed. Thanks For Your Thoughts, George T

I wouldn't use them, they deteriorate from within, it doesn't make any difference how they are packaged. It would be interesting to test them at rated voltage though. New capacitors are inexpensive.
