Hi i have a lady that is dropping off a radio to be repaired it has been in there family for years, and the line cord has shorted and need replaced first, after checking the transformer, replacing all the caps as well as the electrolytics,i plan to line things up,I have never worked on a Philco,i have been told that they are difficult to service if so is that true and what may i encounter working on this set. Thanks

The worst part of these is there is a band switch that is massive and contains many components that are hard to reach...that switch also covers access to some tube bases. You may be OK if you don't need to troubleshoot to a component level. Look at the thread on the Philco 46-480 (same chassis) on the August board to get an idea. One of the few sets that made me throw in the towel.

Hi Terry,
One problem to look for in Philcos is corrosion in the Loctal tube sockets. Philco had a great fondness for Loctals which are highly susceptible to corrosion in the sockets.
This presents often as the radio cutting in and out.

Regrettably this is the same problem presented by a defective band switch mentioned earlier. You could wind up going crazy looking for the problem in the band switch when it is in a tube socket or visa versa.

Beware!

All the Best,

Bill Grimm

LOL! I completely agree! Show me someone who has claimed to have prospered in the antique radio restoration business, and I will show you either a liar or someone that I would not care to encounter in a dark alley!

:Yes i can tell you for sure it is not important to me to make a dime, just break even, the point is the people that made the radios are not hear any longer, and the repaired radios will still be working when i am goon

Hi Terry , Don't think you will find Philco much more
difficult than any other .One model I just did had four little rubber tabs between the oscillator and chasiss . Leave them there if you see that. Not sure on yours. They need to be there even though it is odd looking . Alignment should be easy per instructions .I got specific model advice on Philco.com also . Not to disrespect help here , but someone may be working on the same exact set over there. If you get stuck. Of course many of the same people are on both sites.Hope it goes smooth for you !!!
