Majestic 20

My Majestic model 20 draws 1.2 amps AC. Is that too much? Seems high to me. It only gets one strong local station. There is no hum in the sound and all the tubes check good. Tried a different 80 tube, no change. What could be wrong? Thanks in advance.

Is there a rating plate or sticker inside the set that gives normal power consumption in watts?

Well, then, you are about 35 watts high, or 33% over the rating, assuming that the power rating was given for 120 volts (the plate should also tell its voltage rating). If the rating was lower (110V was common in the early 30's when this set was made), current draw on modern line voltage (around 117 VAC) will be higher.

If the power transformer doesn't get infernally hot after an hour or so of operation, and it doesn't "smell hot" (emit odors from burning wire insulation or potting compound) your set is probably OK. If it does have either/both of these symptoms, either you have an overload on the heater winding (since you already cleared the high voltage windings by removing the 80 tube) or your power transformer has an interlayer short.
