Crosley 27 -Revisited
10/12/2013 7:21:56 AMDave Froehlich
Hello All,
I started working on this radio in 2007 and then it got put into storage. I had removed one of the RF transformers because it was open. I need to know what transformer will work as a replacement. The one that's missing is identical to the one that's still there. Maybe someone has a little more service data for the Model 27, as well. In the schematic:

http://www.nostalgiaair.org/Resources/421/M0043421.htm

both transformers have the same part number.

Thanks,

Dave

Hello Again,
There is a part number on the schematic for this coil:
71W 22678. Maybe that will help find one.

Thanks,

Dave

The 3 RF coils should match for proper tracking.

PTOP has coils.

Norm,
I have searched that page. I have no idea which of those is a good match. Is there a cross reference from Crosley to Meisner? Please help.

Norm,
This radio has an antenna coil and two RF coils. I don't see a third one. It's not on the schematic. Another similar model (that there's a diagram of in Riders on a page near the 28 (aka. 27)) has 3 but this one has the two 71W 22678 RF transformers.
I just checked the input and output transformers on the amplifier and they're both open. There is no connection from B+ to any connection on the input transformer (T7 71W-22933 on the schematic). The output transformer is a part of that old style speaker. I plan on using a more modern speaker, so I'm going to need to find the right one at PTOP too. But which one, I have no idea. But I can figure out out put transformers easier than I input transformers or RF transformers.

Thanks,

Dave

Since this is a one dial radio with three tuned circuits they should all track together. Your antenna coil and two RF coils should have the same tuned sections.

You could try a coil designed for broadcast band. Could also change all three as a matched set. Think I would try a couple coils designed for broadcast first. Should be something close.

Might call Gary at PTOP. He has a good idea what he has in stock.

Norm,
I found a Meissner catalog online, where I see that the coils are (were) available with and without the can (shield). So it doesn't matter if I misplaced the can. They cost so little on PTOP, I'll order a bunch.
The other problems are the input and output transformers for Push-Pull 31s. I won't be able to hear the tuner if the amplifier isn't working. So I need a little help with those transformers, as well. They are also open.
Gary has something on his website like "don't ask me to help you find a part". So I'm not sure he will help. So please help if you can.

Thanks very much,

Dave

I always have taken that to mean don't ask me to go out looking for parts for you that I don't have. Rather than don't ask me if I have something.

Richard,
Yes, I do ask if something listed is in stock. But he does't help pick out something, or answer a design or technical question, like we discuss in this forum. Anyway, I like PTOP. The next thing I need to know is which input transformer will replace the one in the Crosley 27. The output transformer needs to match the 10K ohms to 4 or 8 ohms. It should also be designed to work with the .8 watt output. Once the amplifier is working, I will be able to hear the tuner.

Thanks,

Dave

Use a transformer similar to Stancor A53C. Both AES and Radio Daze has these. PTOP should also. Look for an audio interstage transformer with ratio 1:3 or around that.

Norm,
OK, I found all the transformers except the output transformer. I have searched and searched but there doesn't seem to be low power, even a universal model that has the 10K ohms and Push Pull to voice coil for battery tube sets. The lowest power I can find is in a Stancor catalog.
I found an unknown on the PTOP website but that's for a single plate 3V4. Is there one I missed? I believe it's an 8 inch 1 watt speaker. I need to replace that too. Maybe PTOP has a speaker with the transformer on it that will work.

Thanks very much,

Dave

Should be able to use a universal transformer up to about 5 watts rating. I don't think a radio cares so much if the power supply is batteries or an AC power.
