Have been restoring this radio, find that although it works after replacing caps, checking and replacing resistors where needed, the sound is very distorted. The output results from two 46's in push-pull, driven by an 89 via a transformer with a center-tapped secondary. The DC resistance of one half of this secondary winding is 166 ohms, the other half is 144 ohms.

Should I conclude that this transformer is bad, unbalancing the push-pull arrangement? What would be a suitable replacement transformer?

Would appreciate any thoughts,

Mark

The transformer is no different now than it was when it left the plant, IMO. That is, the windings are never perfectly equal in resistance. I would look at distortion in the stages ahead of the output. Check for voltages too high, resistors out of spec, Inject a clean signal in to various stages.
