I have a Channel Master cassette recorder model 6305 which I can't get a schematic so troubleshooting is difficult. When I play a cassette I get predominant static or steady noise above the recording, music. I can barely hear the recording, music in the background. How can I troubleshoot this? Maybe with an audio signal generator? Is the head defective?

Check the head adjustments. A bent head mount is common. Record on a blank tape. See how that sounds. If that sounds okay the head is out of adjustment for prerecorded tapes.

Keeping it simple...Just look for a bad ground connection on the heads, circuit board, etc...

Thanks Brian C. That's good advice for every technician. I was wondering if you could send me a typical schematic of a cassette recorder showing how the heads are fed to the PCB and a tutorial of how the heads convert the tape to audio?
