PHILCO MODEL 19
8/19/2013 1:33:56 PMTROY
JUST PICKED UP A 1933/34 PHILCO CATHEDRAL MODEL 19 AT AN ANTIQUE STORE. GOT A PRETTY GOOD BUY ON IT FOR ONLY $50. GOT IT HOME AND LOOKED IT OVER, ALL THE WIRING WAS IN GOOD SHAPE SO I TOOK A CHANCE AND PLUGGED IT IN. LOW AND BEHOLD THE RADIO STARTING WORKING. ALL THE TUBES LIT UP AND I WAS ABLE TO TUNE IN LOCAL STATIONS WITHOUT EVEN HOOKING UP AN ANTENNA. THE ONLY ISSUE I HAVE IS THAT THE VOLUME CONTROL SQUEELS REALLY LOUD WHEN TRYING TO TURN IT UP. IVE READ A LOT OF INFO STATING THAT IF THE TUBE SHIELDS ARE MISSING THAT IT WILL CAUSE THIS ISSUE. ALL 3 SHIELDS ARE MISSING. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THERE IS A COMPANY MAKING REPRODUCTION TUBE SHIELDS FOR THIS MODEL? IVE SEARCHED THE INFO NET HIGH AND LOW WITH NO LUCK. CANT FIND ANYTHING ON EBAY WITHER. ANY INFO WILL HELP. THANK YOU.

These will probably work if your tubes are the right shape: plug the following text string into an eBay search box-

Vintage Goat Radio Tubes w. Shields Lot of 3

These things come up all the time on eBay. You just have to know what to search for ("Philco tube shields", "GOAT tube shields").

You alternatively could buy some thinwall aluminum electrical-conduit tubing at a home improvement store. This comes in various internal diameters and you should be able to find a size that just fits over your tubes. Cut to the needed length and bolt a groundwire on, then solder the groundwire to the chassis.
