Hi from Australia
Can the field coil around the speaker be omitted and a permanent magnet speaker instead.

Yes, it can, but you will need to do a few modifications to ensure satisfactory operation. The field coil can be replaced with either a choke inductor or a power resistor in the set's B+ pi filter. This is mostly your choice: the power resistor is the less expensive option but it may not give the AC ripple suppression that the choke approach provides (so your set may have more "hum" than it originally did).

If you can provide the make/model of the set that you are contemplating changing, users of this forum can give you more detailed information on the conversion process.

Thankyou for your prompt reply cv. The radio is a Charlie McCarthy no 1, parts a bit hard to find over here

In the case you still have the old original speaker,
just remove the field coil, and install it somewhere over the new PM speaker or somewhere on the chassis or into the set cabinet.

PS: Keep the metal core installed inside the field coil.

On the first picture, the field coil has been installed aside the chassis

On the next picture, the field coil has been installed (silicone glued) over the PM speaker.

PS: Be carefull to the magnetic pole. When the field coil is energized, it should be attracted by the Permanent magnet pole.

In the last picture, you see a humbacking coil aside.

I forgot to tell that when i'm forced to install a PM speaker, i usually get rid of the humbacking coil.

Alan,

There are places that can recone speakers. It can be expensive though. I had a electrodynamic speaker reconed for a Webster-Chicago wire recorder just to keep it all original.

I would really consider a "recone job" for a highly collectible radio, instead of a major electronic mod like a PM speaker transplant. Some sets are very interesting technically but will never hit the "desirable" list as the catalin and character sets have- these are candidates for practical mods like replacement of electrodynamic speakers with PM units and so on. No one will care.

But it seems to me that there should be a higher standard for pop-culture and historically significant models. Don't want to wax too philosophical here, but at what point do we stop treating these units as techological/hobby hardware curosities and begin to regard them as important cultural icons over which we merely have stewardship?

Point taken cv and I agree with your concerns,at this point I am only trying to get it going and will investigate reconing possibilities
Thankyou all:
