Cannot get over the air stations

I have a General Television Radio that is driving me insane. I cannot get any stations and I don't know why. I know the oscillator is working as well as all of the stages. I inject a signal at the antenna input grid and I can follow any frequency changes I make with the tuning condenser. However, I cannot get a signal to flow through from the antenna coil primary. I tried an inductive loop as well as a direct hookup through a dummy load, to no avail. I also tried using a 12' antenna, nothing. What am I missing. Please help.

What model of General Television radio is it? Without knowing exactly what it is, I would speculate that there is a fault in the antenna coupling coil- possibly an open or shorted coil (possibly due to indirect lightning damage). Some early sets also adjusted volume by controlling the RF level coming in from the antenna; a failure in the pot or rheostat here will result in no signal making it through to the first active (tube) stage.

Posting a link to a model number/schematic will get you a more finely-honed response.

A modulated 455 IF signal can be forced through from a signal generator without the osc operating.

Hi Pat,
you may want to look at the level you are running your signal generator. At the RF section or going into the IF, it should be very low.
Don't over drive the signal. You can push the signal through a bad section if you crank the signal generator high enough.

Best Regards,

Bill
