Static up and down the band

Hello all,
I just replaced all capacitors in my Hallcrafters s-38D chassis. The dc output voltage is about 99 volts dc. The radio plays, however, with a lot of static. I have checked all the tube emissions and found all to test good except the converter, test weak. Any thoughts on this problem?
Thank you for any help!

You might try shorting the antenna input to the ground input and then tuning across the band (any band) to see if the static is still there. If it is, it is being produced in the set itself.

The S-38D used slug-tuned IF transformers with fixed capacitors inside the cans. Previous versions of the S-38 used fixed coils tuned by compression capacitors. If the caps in the S-38D IF cans go bad, they can cause the static problem, which would be present even if there is no antenna input (i.e., with the antenna grounded).

Was the static present before you recapped the set? Is the static on all the bands?

Yes, not as bad! And the static is on all band, however, mostly on the BC band.
Thank you!

Daniel,

If the static is only heard while tuning the radio but not when not tuning, may want to clean the grounding contacts between the tuning cap rotor and frame. If these contacts are dirty can cause static while tuning the radio.
