Missing tube?
7/19/2013 6:11:52 AMJohn
I have an Emerson chassis and it is missing a tube. It uses 6 tubes and the others are 80, 6A7, 6D6, 85, and a 41. Seems like the missing tube is a first audio amp as is right next to the 41 tube. It has 5 pins. What would this tube be?

I goofed. The 5pin socket is for the speaker. So is only a 5 tube set. Wonder what ch# it is?

Sir John:

Here are your poassibilities . . . . . further delve into, and check 'em out.

Hi Edd,
My Emerson AR176 has a bad power transformer and the L143 chassis has a good power transformer in it. Can I use the one from the L143 in the AR176? The AR176 has 6 tube and the L143 only has 5 tubes.
Thanks, John

Sir John

After electrically evaluating . . . . . . that certainly seems permissible, with both sets using about the same B+ level from either sets 80 rectifier circuitry.

That extra tube used is relevent to either sets audio and detector circuitry.

Two 76 triodes are used on the higher tube count set, with a sole 85 used on the other set.

Extra B+ power consumption, with it being MINIMAL, will be of no concern.

The filament power consumption ends up being of no consequence either, since both radios filament supply consumptions run at 6.3 volts and one 85 pulls 300 mils, while two 76's are pulling 150 each, is being that same 300 mils of consumption.

The physical dimensions between the two transformers . . . . . is yours to confirm.

Last of all would be the consideration of the power transformer design center of a 117 VAC primary input voltage, so it might be wise to install a voltage bucking filament transformer in series with the power transformer primary in order to drop either 6 or 12VAC.

That would then correct for our modern times, higher AC power line voltages, and be easier on that sets old transformer.
