Smoking Zenith!
7/15/2013 4:04:10 PMT.B.
I have a zenith floor model 10S470 that starts smoking after it warms up.
The radio plays, but it smokes when it does so I don't keep it on long of course.
Any ideas what this could be?
Thanks!

Overload on the B+ bus, caused by leaky filter capacitor, shorted bypass capacitor, etc. Could also be a bad (internally shorted) power transformer. If you're lucky, the smoke is coming from a resistor. If you're unlucky, it's coming from the transformer.

Play it like this and you will soon have a dead set.
Maybe even a bonfire.

:Yes, I wouldn't keep playing it in this condition or you could end up with an expensive repair. Try to locate what is smoking by color or smell. Something is drawing too much current and overheating the part that is smoking. Find that problem or problems before you try playing it again. Mark from Kalamazoo

Start by pulling both the 6X5G's then turn it on. It won't play of course, but it also should not smoke.
If it does, you are looking at a new power transformer or the filament lines are shorting to ground someplace.

Remove the chassis and follow your nose and look for the burnt place.

If the smoke persisted with the tubes removed and you don't find a place where the filaments short, then plug it in this time with the tube heater secondary disconnected from the tubes. The speaker can be disconnected.
If the transformer smokes now, it is toast. Sorry.

Hi, could be the rubberized wiring heating up and smoking. I know the Zeniths usually need a lot of rewiring, at least the ones I've worked on. But you will probably need to remove the chassis and take a look. Good Luck, George T

Probably a short somewhere, bad caps, or a bad transformer.
