Volkswagen 8BVW Car Radio weak reception
7/13/2013 3:49:59 PMDave Froehlich
Hello All,
I have the service data for this radio. It's in AR-58. When I touch a screwdriver to the collector of Q1, the reception is a lot stronger. If I touch the antenna input or the base of Q1 (secondary of L1) the signal gets weaker.
Very weak stations are almost inaudible (unless I touch the collector of Q1 with a screwdriver). It's difficult to say whether this problem is the RF amplifier (Q1), or something in the AVC line. The Base voltage of Q1 is about 1.2 volts, which is a little high, almost twice what it's supposed to be. The emitter voltage is supposed to be .1 volts but it's 0 volts. The collector voltage is 10 volts, which is correct.
This is a puzzle. Q1 is a DS-71 (ECG107).
Please help if you can.

Thanks,

Dave

Hello Again All,
It was indeed, Q1 (RF amplifier). I replaced it and, like magic, reception is quite strong now.
I hope that this will help someone who, someday, has the same problem with a radio like this one.

Thanks,

Dave
