Long Wave Stations

Are there any long wave stations operating in the UNITED STATES any more? Sometimes I have trouble getting a station around (between 300 KC & 400 KC). I used to get them ALL the time back in the 80s to 90s. There was one in two different locations in the north woods & in the southern part of the state & they came in on the same frequency (between 300 KC & 400 KC). One was in DULUTH (I think) & one was around the cities. My M660 ZENITH picked them up REAL well. Almost like local! VERY sensitive set. Tremendous selectivity. I think one was at 375 KC & the other was at 350 KC. Any ideas? My TRANSOCEANIC logs list them but some are far away.

Yes, there a many LF stations operating all over the US. They are used with a receiver in aircraft called the "Automatic Dircection Finder", or ADF. These radios also cover the broadcast band, and are very useful (before LORAN and GPS) for finding airports that do not have more elaborate navagation systems, just a local radio station. The one at the Covington, GA. airport is at 370kHz and can be picked up in the plane no farther than 5-10 miles away. They go from just giving an ID in Morse code to complete weather information. They do not cover the nation like the old range system did, as they are only around 5 or 10 Watts output.
