Antique radio values?

I've got too many old radios, and I want to thin them out. I haven't bought or sold any radios for a few years, nor checked eBay prices. I was somewhat astonished. I have too many garden-variety 3-dial TRFs from the '20s and 30s, and they seem to be essentially worthless. Their value is about what the shipping cost is. I could sell their '01A tubes for more than the radio is worth, and take the chassis and cabinet to the dump.
I have a few, more interesting sets that are now worth about $300-500. I might sell those and give away the others to whoever will come and pick up the whole shebang.

Hi Doug, those old TRF sets are hard to sell on Ebay and the prices have gone down on most radios. Ebay is sluggish but generally picks up again around August. You could always list them on Radio Attic I think they just take 10%, but they have to be in working order. Heck you could always donate one to the local museum. Good Luck, George T

:Hey Guys
I LOVE those old TRF sets. Let me know what you have - I would be interested. I use them a lot and love to preserve the radio history.
If you have pics or a list, send it to my e-mail address.

I collected 1920's radios also and wouldn't want to sell any but values have gone down. As older collectors pass along most younger ones don't have interest in these sets..

Yes, this is the "collector bow wave effect" and it affects most mass-market collectibles: much of the demand (and therefore monetary value) of a collectible is fueled by older, well-heeled folks willing to fork out cash to own a familiar, much-desired object from their youth.
This process seems brutal but it actually serves to shake out the kitsch/junk from the true classics.

You may consider contacting a local Senior Center to see it they would be interested in displaying these radios at their location. I have 18 radios at my local Meals on Wheels Senior Center and the old folks rave about how much they enjoy them.

Strange how things are, I love vintage radios, but will never see these early 1920 sets in real life, just pictures of them on the internet. Within an 80km. radius from my home I can go see elephants, rinos, lions, leopards, cheetas,monkeys,baboons,etc.,etc.,in the flesh. Norm I'll swop you you for one!! Postage might be a bit steep !

: If your'e going to give away sets, people need to know what area in the US you are located.

A while back at terminal 3 at SFO they had a nice display of old televisions like the Predicta along with historical items, literature, and photos from the early age of TV. Maybe O'Hare would like to do a display saluting old time radio using your sets. When they are done with the sets and call you up to return them tell them you never heard of Doug Criner. Problem solved!
